Monarch Butterfly Habitat to honor Aldo Leopold, Wisconsin’s environmentalist. Pamphlet: Printable PDF or Web Version

  Program:

10 a.m. – Welcome Back the Spring Ceremony at the habitat
11 a.m. – Reception at the Community Center on the shores of beautiful Shell Lake.

2008 Scenic Beauty Award presented to Happy Tonics for the Monarch Butterfly Habitat from the Citizens for a Scenic Wisconsin, La Crosse, Wisconsin.

  • Music: The New Editions (Country and Polka).
  • Community meal: Local raised and grown food will be served on compostable plates and utensils.
  • Keynote Environmental Speakers: Damian Vraniak, Native Prairie; Bob Hasman, Aldo Leopold; Cassie Thompson, Youth Award Winning Speech “Trumpeter Swan”; and Kay Karras, Poet Laureate from Solon Springs will read a few poems from her new book Bits of Birch.
  • Exhibits: Non Profit honorary member organizations will feature sustainability displays.
  • Environmental activities: For children.

FREE Monday Night at the Movies and Music,
Lakefront Pavilion, Shell Lake, WI

The short environmental films are sponsored by Happy Tonics with a Washburn County Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse grant, in cooperation with the Shell Lake Downtown Lakefront Committee. All MYM environmental education programs support non smoking, alcohol and other drug addiction free programs to encourage healthy outside environmental activities for all ages. www.happytonics.org

9 p.m. Prior to family friendly full length feature film
Short film - India Inhales. (24 minutes). Grades 7-12, college, adults.

India Inhales is funded by a Washburn County Alcohol and Other Drug Addictions (AODA) Grant. Every day in India, 55,000 children start smoking compared to 3,000 in the USA. Film explores cynicism of major global tobacco companies and the targeting of India and under the age of 25 as a new growth market.

Short film - Razvan Marcu in Romania. (26 minutes). Grades 7-12, college, adults.

Razvan Marcu in Romania is funded by a Washburn County AODA Grant. Inspires young people to be role models. One youth is making a difference in Romania after the fall of Ceausescu. Razvan Marcu turned his activism to fight for a clean environment. Now he leads his own action group ECOSENS. Film encourages young people to become environmental advocates.

 
 
 
 
Morph Your Mind Environmental Education Series continues...

Class 101:
Morph Your Mind Monarch Butterfly Habitat Classes

  • Dates: Saturday - June 13, July 11 and August 15
  • Time: 10 a.m. - 11 a.m.
  • Class: $5.00 for all three classes or by individual class.

Butterfly and Native Plant Identification Classes
Attendees learn to identify butterflies and native plants, participate in butterfly counts and spend time becoming knowledgeable in natural science. Participants can also volunteer time at the habitat during class time if they wish.

  • Last day of class: August 15. Ice Cream Social at the Ice Cream Shack. 11 a.m. - 12 noon
  • Cost: $4.00

Participants who attend all three classes (June 13, July 11 and August 15) will receive a Certificate of Recognition from Happy Tonics. These accomplished naturalists are invited to celebrate their environmental accomplishments at an Ice Cream Social after class.

Class 102:
Butterfly Hike and Picnic

  • Dates: Saturday, July 25, 2009
  • Time: 10 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
  • Class and picnic: $5.00 (class) $10.00 (picnic)

Learn about butterflies and other insects, amphibians, native plants and wild edibles from a resident butterfly expert and ethno botany specialist. Attend a morning walking tour and picnic at the DNR Wild Monarch Butterfly Habitat on the south side of Shell Lake. Walk to habitat from Happy Tonics downtown office. We will hike along a multi-purpose and DNR trail to State land on the south side of Shell Lake. Visit a Wild Monarch Butterfly Habitat within a forest and enjoy a picnic on the wild side.
